Chapter Fifteen
When I went downstairs on Sunday morning, my mom and dad were huddled over the paper at the kitchen table. I figured it had to be some review of a local art exhibit or an editorial about the state of arts funding in Illinois.
But when they saw me, they both looked up and I knew they were reading about something a lot closer to home than the lack of grants available for performance art.
―What‘s that?‖ I asked, attempting to read the headline below the upside-down Entertainment section heading.
―An article.‖
―Is it about Reed?‖
―Yes,‖ my mom answered, slowly moving her elbow to cover the headline.
―Can I see?‖ I reached for the paper, but my dad pulled it back toward him.
―I‘m not sure you want to.‖
―Why?‖
―Apparently someone from Cabot talked to aTribune reporter and she didn‘t have very nice things to say.‖
This I had to see. ―About Reed?‖
Reed and I hadn‘t talked about the scene in the hallway with Taylor since it happened, but the rest of the day it was the talk of the school. With a few choice words from Taylor, Reed‘s shiny image had tarnished. Someone probably called theTribune and told them all about how Taylor put Reed in his place.
My mom took the paper and started folding it up. ―I think we should all just forget about the article.‖
―No, I want to read it.‖ Before she could object, I grabbed the paper and opened it to the creased page. And that‘s when I knew why she wanted us to forget all about the article.
Because the article wasn‘t just about Reed. It was all about me.
―TV Bad Boy Reed Vaughn Creates Drama at Home in Chicago,‖ the headline read. And that was about the kindest line in the entire article.
Wild Dunes‘s bad boy Reed Vaughn blew into the Windy City a few weeks ago in hopes of cleaning up his act. After months of trouble in Los Angeles, including numerous drunken episodes, difficulty on the set of his hit TV show, and finally, the car accident that left his brand- new Porsche 911 totaled after driving into a Starbucks on Wilshire Boulevard, Vaughn was sent here to live with his biological father, Bookman Theater artistic director Will Carlisle.
―I don‘t think it‘s going so well,‖ says a source close to Carlisle‘s daughter. ―The whole thing was entirely unexpected.‖
Vaughn is attending Cabot Academy with his half sister, Vanessa Carlisle. But according to the source, Vanessa isn‘t exactly thrilled with the idea of having a brother.
―She‘d just as soon have him go home tomorrow,‖ says the source, a senior at Cabot Academy. ―Maybe she‘s jealous that her brother is a big star, or maybe she just doesn‘t like the idea that her parents are so excited for Reed to be here, but either way, Vanessa and Reed aren‘t getting along.‖
Vaughn is the son of Academy Award–winning actress Marnie Vaughn and Will Carlisle.
The two met while the actress was performing in a Bookman Theater adaption of Ibsen‘sA Doll‘s House in 1987.
The producers ofWild Dunes gave Reed Vaughn an ultimatum—shape up or ship out.
